Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcycles are a very common form of transportation in Los Angeles (fun, easy, cost-effective), and unfortunately, that means that motorcycle accidents are common as well.
Motorcycle accidents are typically caused by other drivers; a direct result of another’s mistake or negligence. And, unfortunately, about 80% of those motorcycle accidents result in injury or death.
Although typically caused by another person, it is the responsibility (and in the best interest) of the motorcycle driver to operate defensively in all situations. Sometimes defense really is the best offense!
Below are some of the most common cause of motorcycle accidents in Los Angeles…
Lane Changes
As a motorcyclist, it is essential that you realize how easily you get lost in a blind spot. Quite simply larger cars just cannot see you. This means that you are at a greater risk of them changing lanes into you and, thus, forcing you off the road. Make sure that you are aware of the drivers around you and where you are in reference to their blind spots… assume they cannot see you and drive accordingly.
Inexperienced Drivers
Inexperienced drivers can get easily intimidated while out on the main roads at first. As such, they may be skittish or over-focused on a single aspect of driving. This can result in them missing you altogether. Again, assume that they cannot see you, anticipate their moves, and drive accordingly.
Speed
Speed is dangerous for motorcycle drivers (as well as car drivers) because it decreases handling ability, requires a faster reaction time, and lengthens the stopping distance of any vehicle. This combination of factors can be deadly for motorcycle riders. Always be aware of your own speed and stay wary of vehicles driving too fast around you.
Unsafe Road Conditions
Good or bad, a motorcycle only has two wheels. Because of this, motorcycles are more susceptible to unsafe road conditions like sand patches, grooved pavement, or black ice. Stay vigilant while you ride and watch for unsafe conditions at all times.
Car Doors
Too often, drivers will parallel park and simply then throw their door open without checking their side mirrors (often talking or texting while they stand). This is known as “getting doored,” and it is common with bicycles and motorcycles alike. If you must ride alongside parked cars, stay aware of the ones with people in them and assume the doors could fly open at any time.
Motorcycle Defects
A defect in manufacturing can prove fatal on any vehicle, but, because of their nature, it can be especially detrimental to a motorcycle. Especially at high speeds, a simple defect can prove catastrophic. Be sure to keep up with the maintenance on your motorcycle and know your bike. If something feels “off” trust your gut and get it checked out.
